About

The Lancing family of schools offers children from nursery to eighteen years a wonderful journey of discovery and inspiration. Founded in 1848, Lancing College provides a first-class living and learning environment which focuses on the individual talents of its pupils, inspiring them to learn, become independent and to excel at every stage in their life. The warmth of the Lancing community, its rich history, its academic distinction and its focus on all-round education combine to make it a very special place, as underscored by the School's ISI inspection of March 2017, where it was rated as excellent in every element.

Underpinning what is so special about Lancing is a holistic, well-developed and future-thinking approach to education. This is a coherent view of what education is about and how the various elements of a Lancing education combine to allow each pupil to grow in their own way throughout their time at the College. Lancing College gives great thought to its wider curriculum, offering a vast array of possibilities to explore, enhance and challenge the mind and the body. More structured programmes such as CCF and the Duke of Edinburgh's Award combine with eclectic musical groups, sports, societies and clubs, student-led committees and new initiatives by inspired pupils. Whilst some pupils focus on developing existing skills, many others are encouraged to try and experience new things they would never have previously considered. These experiences travel with them long after they leave school.

Lancing is unapologetically global in its reach. 30% of the School's students come from over 40 different nations, and Lancing plans to increase its international presence in the years to come. As the School approaches its 175th anniversary, Lancing is preparing a portrait exhibition of the School as it exists today, including portraits of support staff, pupils, and the many women who historically have not been represented in the dining room's artworks. Lancing is now, and will continue to be, a welcoming environment for all - a concept reflected in the School's 110% bursary programme, which currently supports 17 children from underprivileged backgrounds. By expanding its outreach and international presence, Lancing will continue to uphold the Christian ethos present since the School's founding, whilst also being welcoming to people of all faiths and none. When pupils leave Lancing, they are happy, confident young adults, self-aware and with a real sense of their place as global citizens. Young people thrive in Lancing's care, and friendships made at Lancing last a lifetime.

Person specification

Governor (Legal): The successful candidate will bring senior-level experience within the legal profession, for example as a solicitor, barrister or General Counsel, and bring a strategic and commercial perspective to the Board. This individual could have an interest in safeguarding, but this is not a requirement for the role.

Governor (Young people): The successful candidate could come from any background, so long as they are passionate about young people. Candidates who have worked with children in their executive career (such as a head teacher of a primary or secondary school, a doctor or social worker) would be of particular interest, but having experience of working with children is not a requirement for the role. Above all, candidates will be aligned with, or have a sympathy for, the Christian values that underpin the Lancing ethos, and will be passionate about the education of young people.
