About

Huboo was founded in 2017 by CEO Martin Bysh and CTO Paul Dodd to help start-up and SME businesses realise their full potential. Frustrated by the lack of quality, trusted multi-channel fulfilment providers, Martin and Paul founded Huboo to fill this gap in the market. The Huboo model applies to all sizes and types of ecommerce businesses, helping online businesses grow by taking care of all their order fulfilment needs - fuelling growth, brand empowerment, and fulfilling ambitions. Alongside four warehouses and large office blocks positioned in Bristol, Huboo has extended its reach across Europe with warehouses in the Netherlands, Spain and Germany, and now seeks to continue its reach internationally into US markets and other countries globally.

Huboo has crafted a bespoke software system which is used on the client side and is integrated into its warehouses. This software is custom-built for its fulfilment services and is designed for the organisation of products stored in its warehouses. Through this platform it allows businesses to stock, store, pick, pack and deliver products by shipping them directly from the wholesaler. This service enables internet retailers to optimise and manage their inventories in a secure and efficient manner. Huboo handles both physical and software products (i.e. protection software for fin-tech clients). Its clients tend to be small or medium-sized entrepreneurial enterprises selling and distributing to customers online. With recent business development, Huboo now extends to global client engagement, opening sales offices in the US, Australia and South America.

Approximately two years ago, Huboo raised money in a safe storage facility (over £1m in seed) and grew its base to up to fifty members of staff. With continuous growth (doubling in size every 4-5 months), both organically and with a few strategic acquisitions, it has now raised roughly £100m and expanded to 550 employees. It is on a strong organic growth trajectory, with further geographic expansion a key priority over the coming years.

Role specification

Huboo has several fundraising plans in the next few years, with its concentration on growing the business and generating company value. With its current turnover at £25m, grown from £300,000 two years ago, Huboo is on track for an ARR of £10m per month by September. It seeks a Chair to ensure that the company is well-positioned for growth and value generation.

The incoming Chair will be responsible for providing an independent voice on the Board and advising the company on good governance and strategy as it continues on its journey of rapid growth. The Chair will ensure that the Board addresses the key strategic and operational issues as well as business risks, and will be highly credible in front of investors as the business continues with fundraising rounds.

Responsibilities of the Chair will include:

  • Advising good governance of the company as well as the Board
  • Helping scale the business with the product base it has developed
  • Ensuring that the Board addresses the key strategic and operational issues as well as business risks
  • Preparing for and chairing all general Board meetings
  • Accessing an extensive network of connections and potential investors, expertise and knowledge to facilitate rapid and effective expansion and development
  • Conducting an annual review of the effectiveness of the Board and senior management team, including ensuring that the Board collectively has the appropriate skills and experience to lead the company in generating fast growth
  • Conducting formal CEO appraisals each year

Person specification

Huboo seeks a Chair who will lead the Board in determining strategy and looking for further opportunities to commercialise their existing product and market position. The new Chair will have previous board experience and will have previous senior leadership experience in a successful technology business. Ideally, they will be able to identify and introduce the company to value adding networks for further investment.

The Chair will have previous operational experience working with venture capital firms gained as a senior leader in a company which has received venture capital investment. They will be able to lead the Board and the senior management team towards its goals whilst also taking into account the target pressures and complexities included in a company that is also VC-backed.

As Board meetings are held in Bristol, and the Board members are expected to attend in person, the successful candidate will be UK-based. However, as Huboo is growing internationally and seeks to continue its development into further global markets, it is keen to hear from candidates who have international experience.

Terms of appointment

The remuneration for this role is competitive, and will be paid in the form of cash and equity. The time commitment for this role is c. eight days per year + additional ad hoc engagement. Board meetings are held every two months (six per year) and are held in-person at the Huboo offices in Bristol. However, the organisation is flexible and will welcome applications from candidates who would prefer to join some of the Board meetings virtually. Pre-agreed reasonable travel expenses will be reimbursed.

The deadline for consideration is 31st March 2022.
