Event recording: Why and how to join a NHS Trust board
July 2023
To help people understand more about the role of an NHS board, and whether they would like to work on one, we hosted a panel Q&A to discuss NHS Trust Boards in detail. Host by Mark Bate, Head of Healthcare at Nurole and a panel of Phil Wilbraham, NED, Epsom and St Helier NHS Trust, and Clancy Murphy, NED, Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
This discussion touched on:
- why should you consider joining the board of an NHS Trust?
- how does the NHS Trust board environment differ from other commercial or third-sector boards?
- advice and tips for the application and interview process for new candidates
You can find a recording of the webinar below, along with a summary of insights.
3 key event insights
- A sector of passion: When you join an NHS Trust Board, you are surrounded by intelligent people who care deeply about improving the NHS system. NEDs have the opportunity to input their ideas when helping the execs shape their strategy. Often, it helps to have a connection to the Trust to be considered as an applicant. The Trust could be local to you or a family member was treated there.
- The NHS challenges are complex: NHS Trusts are heritage organisations that often haven't had the luxury to step back and reevaluate where they are. The board packs can be long and the Trust's challenges can be acute.
- Balancing quality of patient care and budgets: As a public organisation, the Trust is constantly asked to do more with less. The opportunity of the non-exec is to support the execs to make good decisions when trying to be efficient with resources.
