Role specification

The Global Board of Trustees is the principal governing body of CIPS and is collectively responsible for the leadership and direction of the organisation. CIPS’ current strategy focuses on consolidating CIPS’ global offering and key areas of growth including the USA. It will strengthen the member and employer value propositions to ensure that CIPS remains relevant, and continues to support both its members and the profession for the wider public good. CIPS is supporting members as they tackle the new global economic environment in a post-pandemic world; addressing climate and the wider ESG agenda and developing new ways of digitising supply chains.  

Roles of the Trustees include:

  • Setting the organisational strategy
  • Overseeing, monitoring and evaluating the implementation of the strategy against agreed objectives Holding the Executive to account by providing constructive scrutiny and challenge
  • Mentoring and supporting the Executive Team
  • Offering independence, external perspective, skills and challenge
  • Ensuring CIPS fulfils its Royal Charter and charity obligations under Charity Law
  • Responsibility for the overall governance of CIPS Group globally
  • Responsibility for prudent financial management of the organisation
  • Responsibility for organisational risk management
  • Oversight of the Board Committees - Nominations, Audit, Remuneration, Foundation, Membership and Disciplinary

Person specification

The Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS) is seeking a new Trustee, who will also sit on the Audit Committee, with a finance background and ideally procurement and supply experience.

The new Trustee will also be a member of the Audit committee. As part of prudent succession planning, CIPS seeks a new Trustee who is financially-qualified to complement the skills composition of the Board. The successful candidate will ensure that there is a robust breadth of finance experience on the sub-committee. As CIPS is a non-profit organisation, the successful candidate should have an understanding of the charity requirements relating to financial management, ideally having experience of working in the charity sector. Experience of procurement and supply and sustainability practices is desirable, but not essential. The successful candidate will join the Audit Committee and the Board on 1st November 2022.

CIPS is open to hearing from international candidates.


Terms of appointment

This role is unremunerated, but reasonable, pre-agreed international travel expenses will be reimbursed. There are four Board meetings (two of which are held in-person and two of which are held virtually) and four Audit Committee meetings per year (all of which are held virtually). This appointment is for an initial three-year term, with the potential to extend for another three years.
