About

The Beacon Collaborative is the place where philanthropists can come together, share ideas and learn from each other – and where organisations can collaborate to support them on their donor journeys. Founded in 2018, it was set up with the express purpose of inspiring more wealthy people to use their assets for the public good.

Beacon Collaborative aims to bring philanthropists together, pooling resources, knowledge and networks from across the sector. It supports new and experienced donors while also working with policy makers, the media and the wider philanthropy sector. For example, it has collaborated with organisations such as the Association of Charitable Foundations, Charities Aid Foundation, the Chartered Institute of Fundraising, UKCF and Big Society Capital, on research, projects, and events that aim to increase engagement with donors and philanthropists. Within Beacon Collaborative, two groups of specialists help to guide and support this work:

  • The Organisations’ Council is a forum for leaders in the philanthropy sector to come together and discuss collectively how their organisations can support philanthropy.
  • The Philanthropists’ Council is a group of active philanthropists who lend their knowledge and experience to support our work

Looking ahead, Beacon Collaborative aims to grow regular philanthropic giving by the wealthy, either through donations or social investment, annually by £2 billion, as well as contributing to a joined-up philanthropy ecosystem which supports philanthropists in giving more and giving better. This will require effective advocacy, bringing the sector in one united voice, and Beacon Collaborative is considering new, digital ways to engage with philanthropists and provide a secure, supportive peer-to-peer network.

Role specification

The Board of Trustees works together in giving strategic direction to Beacon Collaborative, setting overall policy, defining goals, setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets. They play an important role in safeguarding the good name and values of the organisation, acting as ambassadors where necessary. They are responsible for overseeing its strategic vision and ensuring its financial health

As Beacon Collaborative looks to the future, it is particularly looking for Trustees who will

  • Oversee the development of charity's digital footprint and reach
  • Guide the expansion of a peer-to-peer community network
  • Ensure a sustainable model with a relatively small operations team

Person specification

Beacon Collaborative is seeking two Trustees as the organisation looks to focus its model and further its impact. Candidates will bring financial acumen, marketing / engagement expertise or experience of developing digital strategy.

Financial acumen: Beacon Collaborative's impact is much greater than its size as an organisation, and it's keen to ensure that this continues to be backed by a strong financial footing. Candidates will therefore have a broad understanding of financial issues and be able to provide effective oversight in this area as its ambitious plans develop.

Marketing / engagement / digital strategy: As Beacon Collaborative looks to connect with even more philanthropists and develop an online provision to support them, candidates may bring marketing / engagement expertise in support of efforts to expand the network. Alternatively, they may have experience of driving digital strategy, whether from a product or technological infrastructure perspective, which they can contribute as the online platform is developed.

On a personal level, the successful candidates must be passionate about the importance and impact of philanthropy. Although based in London, the charity is keen to hear from those across the UK and is committed to representing the diversity of the philanthropy sector on its Board.
