About

Since its foundation in 2011, Academy Transformation Trust (ATT) has grown to its current family of 21 academies (primary, secondary, post-16 and FE, and one special school) operating across the East, South East, East Midlands and West Midlands. ATT is responsible for the education of over 13,500 learners, for the careers of almost 2,000 colleagues, and for the most effective spending of over £80m of taxpayer income each year. The Trust's vision is to transform the lives of its learners, its staff, and the communities it serves. It encapsulates that ambition in one simple slogan: #TransformingLives.

Of ATT's 21 schools 17 are currently rated 'good', two are rated 'requires improvement' and one school is rated 'inadequate'. The Trust has recently taken several schools straight from 'inadequate' to 'good'.
The Trust's four key values are:Commitment to education — ATT's core purpose is to positively impact the lives of all its learners. Education will always be at the heart of everything it doesInnovation and improvement — ATT is committed to innovative education — always moving forward and never standing still. Its learners are ambitious and prepared for a future that is constantly changing and developingTransparency and integrity — ATT is proud of its success whilst being open and honest about its areas for improvement. Its actions are always ethical and in the best interests of all its stakeholdersDedication to inclusivity — ATT's learners are all different and all are important to it. It aspires to support, challenge, and help each one of them reach their full potential, regardless of their background or level of ability

Role specification

Trustees are accountable for the strategic direction of the Trust, the effective financial management and the educational performance of the academies. Trustees are non-executive and work strategically alongside a highly effective executive leadership team led by the new CEO, Sir Nick Weller. The Trustees are also Directors of the Trust, which is a company limited by guarantee and registered as such at Companies House. Trustees are required to take collective responsibility for all aspects of the Board’s work — while specific skills areas are sought, it is expected that strategy development and accountability rests with all Trustees.

Person specification

ATT now seeks a new Trustee with senior-level education experience to join the Board and support the work of this leading multi-academy trust. In addition to acting as a critical friend to the Board, they will be a member of the Trust's four-person 'flying squad'. As a member of the squad, they will attend several Ofsted inspections a year at ATT's schools, and help guide them through the inspection process.

The successful candidate could be a recently-retired Head or Principal, the CEO or Director of School Improvement at a large multi-academy trust or have other relevant education experience. Candidates do not require direct Ofsted inspector experience, but should have regularly dealt with Ofsted inspections and be confident in engaging with Ofsted.

Above all, the successful candidate will be a strong collaborator, offering advice and support as well as being able to provide effective challenge where necessary. They will also be passionate about ATT's mission to transform lives by putting education first.

Board composition

A list of current Trustees and local academy committee chairs can be found here.

Terms of appointment

There are four Board meetings, which Trustees can attend either in person in Reddicroft or virtually. Additionally, this Trustee will be expected to sit on the School Outcomes Committee, which meets between three and six times per year either virtually or in a hybrid format. Further, as a member of the 'flying squad', this Trustee will be expected to attend roughly two Ofsted inspections per year. The appointment is for a four-year term, renewable once. The role is unremunerated but reasonable, pre-agreed expenses will be reimbursed.

Location

Trustees need not be locally based, but will actively commit to the role and able to attend Ofsted inspections in person.

Diversity

Academy Transformation Trust welcomes applications from everyone regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, faith or disability. As women, younger people, those from a range of socioeconomic backgrounds which reflect the local community, and those with a disability are currently under-represented, applications from those individuals would be particularly encouraged. All appointments will be made on merit, following a fair and transparent process. In line with the Equality Act 2010, however, the organisation may employ positive action where candidates from underrepresented groups can demonstrate their ability to perform the role equally well.

The deadline for consideration is 16 April 2023.

If you would like to register your initial interest in this role, please fill in the form below.

Please note that registering your interest via this microsite does not constitute a formal application for the role. If it would be worth submitting an application, a member of the Nurole team will be directly in touch ahead of the deadline to let you know and invite you to apply through the Nurole platform.
